The President, H.E John Dramani Mahama, has in consultation with the members of the Council of State, as enshrined in Article 207 (1) of the 1992 Constitution of the Republic of Ghana, confirmed the appointment of Mr. Emmanuel Yao Adzator as the Director-General of the Ghana Prisons Service with effect from 1st December, 2016.
This was contained in a statement dated 13th December, 2016, and signed by Mr. Julius Debrah, Chief of Staff.Mr. Emmanuel Yao Adzator, prior to his confirmation, has been in Acting position of the Service since 1st February, 2016.
DGP Adzator, was commissioned into the Ghana Prisons Service superior corp in April 1989 as an Assistant Superintendent of Prisons (ASP) and through dedication and hard work, has risen steadily to his current rank, Deputy Controller of Prisons,
He also holds a Postgraduate certificate in Human resource management, GIMPA (2003). In his determination to increase his academic and professional horizon, Mr Adzator attended many courses and training programmes which include: Defense Management Seminar- GIMPA (2003), Representative of Ghana Prisons Service in the National Job Evaluation Team for Salary Reforms, Ministry of Public Sector Reform (2007), New Approach to Psychological Services in Correctional Institutions, Galilee College- Isreal (2008), Prisons Management and Rehabilitation, Galilee International Management institute-Isreal (2013) amongst others.
Mr Adzator during the course of his career has also held various command positions and staff appointments. He was the Staff Officer Administration, Training, and Criminal Records Officer, Prisons Headquarters, Accra (1991 – 1999). He became the 2nd-In-Command (2IC) Winneba Local Prison (1999-2001), 2nd-In-Command (2IC) James Camp Prisons (2001-2002).
Other appointments he has held are General Staff Officer, Prisons Headquarters, Accra (2002-2003), Officer-in-Charge (OIC) Obuasi Local Prisons (2004-2009), 2IC Medium Security Prison, Nsawan (2009-2010), Correction Advisor UNAMID-Sudan (2010-2012). Until his appointment as DOP in charge of Technical, he was the OIC of Kumasi Central Prisons and the Ashanti Regional Commander.
Mr Adzator, during his service has the following medals to his credit: Medal for 50th Independence Anniversary of Ghana, Peace keeping Operations-UNAMID, Long- service and Good conduct Ghana Prison, June Fourth. He is happily married and blessed with children. He enjoys reading, listening to news and sight-seeing. Back to Top
