The Nsawam Medium Security Prison was established in 1960 and received its first inmates on 10th October; 1960.It is located to the south-eastern part of the Nsawam Township on the outskirts along the Accra-Nsawam trunk road. The prison is located on 823.027 acres of land. Construction of the prison began in 1956 with land acquired from the Adonten division of the Aburi stool. The acquisition was achieved through the assistance and negotiation of the late Ohene Djan, a royal of Aburi and a friend of President Kwame Nkrumah. Establishment of the Nsawam Medium Security prison was necessitated by overcrowding in the central prisons and the McCarthy committee on prison which recommended that a new prison be built at Nsawam near Accra. The category of inmates Nsawam Meduim Security Prison holds are remands, recividics, lifers, condemned prisoners and presidents pleasure.
The female prison was opened on the 10th December, 1973. It is the biggest female prison the country to provide safe custody for female prisoners and also to seek their welfare and reformation. In 1988, there was an exchange programme between Ghana and Nigeria where seventeen Ghanaian female prisoners serving various terms in Nigerian prisons were transferred to Ghana and placed in Nsawam on 17th December, 1988.
It was converted from a World War 2 military magazine into a prison and gazette as such in 1946. The prison is situated at Efiduase in the New Juaben municipality. It has six blocks, four of which accommodate convicts while two house remands and trials. The authorized capacity of the prisons is four hundred (400) inmates. However, the present lock-up is six hundred on the average. For administrative convenience, excess prisoners are transferred to other prison establishments with the prior approval of the Director-General of Prisons.
The Akuse Local Prison is located in the Lower Manya Krobo Municipality of the Eastern Region of Ghana. It was converted from a merchantile warehouse to a prison facility. . The original capacity of the prison was sixty but it current holds a hundred and eighty (180) inmates. The prison has a land of 28.5 acres. The Akuse township has a Local Prison and Female Prison both of which are located on the same place of land. The Akuse Local Prison holds convicts and remand prisoners.
