Prison Ladies Association (PRILAS)
HISTORICAL
BACKGROUND
Realizing the need to promote the interests of female staff and to
address their needs in an ever growing world, the Prison Ladies
Association (PRILAS) was established in 2006. Over the years, the
Association has seen a lot of progress in the attainment of it
objectives.
OBJECTIVES
• To organize and unite female officers under one umbrella in
order to promote a healthy relationship among them.
• To help develop the hidden potentials, and capabilities of
members through relevant training programmes.
• To act as a mouth piece for women for the attention of
management.
• To offer counselling and other services to inmates and act as
their mentors to enable them successfully reform and re-integrate
into society.
• To collaborate with other women’s organization that have similar
objectives as the association to promote learning, sharing of
knowledge, resources and experiences.
• To generate funds to support inmates and their children in order
to make life meaningful for them while in prison and on discharge.
EMBLEM AND SLOGAN
Our slogan is “We love, we care, we Support”.
MEMBERSHIP
Membership comprises all female staff including female recruits
and officer cadets.
Retired female prisons officers may be made honorary members
subject to approval by the executive council.
NATIONAL HEADQUARTERS
The national headquarters of the association is located at the
Prisons Headquarters in Accra.
ORGANIZATIONAL STRUCTURE
The Executive Council which is headed by the most senior female
officer in the Prison service and she is deputized by the second
most senior female officer.
All other members of the executive are elected by the Electoral
College.
Regional branches which are also headed by the most senior female
officer in each of the ten regions in Ghana.
PARTNERS
To enable PRILAS effectively work towards achievement of her
objectives, we partner the MDAs, women’s groups with similar
objectives, NGOs and Faith Based Organizations (FBOs).
ACTIVITIES
Activities include educational programmes, health promoting
activities, charitable events, Religious Programmes, Welfare
activities.
ACHIEVEMENTS
• Establishment of a “Mother and baby” unit at Nsawam Female
Prison.
• Donations to the needy in society.
• Establishment of NGO (Corrections Reforms Platform/COREP) to
assist in achievement of established goals.

HISTORICAL BACKGROUND
The Prison Officers’ Wives Association (PROWA) was formed some
23years ago by wives of some prison officers when they realised
the need to raise the general consciousness of officers’ wives
towards the attainment of their full potentials.
With the Motto” Be a source of comfort” PROWA members have been
supporting to their spouses as well as one another in love and
friendship since the formation of PROWA.
The Association is headed by the National President who is the
wife of the most senior male officer in the Ghana Prisons Service.
Membership is compulsory for all officers’ wives. The Association
also operates in prison establishment all over the country.
OBJECTIVES
1.To forge amiable relationships among members.
2.To assist one another in times of need.
3.To maintain friendly relations with female prison officers and
other women’s groups with similar objectives.
4.To formulate strategies for a sustainable empowerment of members
through relevant training and educational programmes.

ACTIVITIES
1.General education for members
2.Regional tour every quarter to by national executives see to
welfare of members
3.Health promoting programmes such as walks, Talks, health
screenings, etc
4.Entertainment programmes in the form of get-to-gather for
members and officers children.

attainment of her objectives of her objectives. MOWAC, NGOs,
Women’s Groups, CSOs.

MEMBERSHIP
All male Prison officers’ wives in the service are members.
OPERATION
•A secretariat at headquarters coordinates activities of the
executives in the local, regional and national levels.
•The executives have jurisdiction over the day-to-day
administration of their members at the stations and report to the
national executives- monthly contributions, meetings, skills
training etc.
