Director of Prisons/Agric

Mr. Hanson Kwame Adu Awuku is a dynamic prisons officer with strong analytical skills and experience in corrections management. He has 28 years working experience with Prisons Service including two years duty tour with the United Nations Missions in Liberia as Corrections Advisor, Mentor and Agricultural expert.

Mr. Adu Awuku was enlisted into the Service on 5th December, 1995 as an Officer Cadet. He was commissioned as an Assistant Superintendent of Prisons on 5th July, 1996, and awarded with the Academic Cane (best in academics in order of merits) from the late President Jerry John Rawlings.

Prior to his current appointment as the Director of Prisons in charge of Agriculture, he was the Officer-In-Charge of the Manhyia Local Prison in Kumasi. He has held several command positions including serving as Chief Agricultural officer, Chief Marketing officer, Chief Commercial officer, acting General Staff officer and Welfare Board member of the Service. He has also worked in various prisons establishments including Nsawam Medium Security prisons, Ahinsan Camp prison, Kpando Local prison and Prisons headquarters.

DOP Adu Awuku is hardworking, very committed and duty conscious. His leadership capabilities and positive initiatives have resulted in establishing a number of important partnerships between Prisons Service and some stakeholders. Notable among them being Yara Ghana, Heifer International, and GLICO resulting in the Prisons Officers Provident Fund (POPFUND).

He has a Master’s Degree in Business Administration (Marketing) from the University of Ghana Business School, Bachelor of Science (BSc) in Agriculture from the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Kumasi, an Advance Executive Certificate in security management, forensic and investigative psychology from Wisconsin University as well as Executive Certificate in Business Administration from Accra Business School.      

Mr. Adu Awuku is a proud product of Pope John’s and Bishop Herman Senior High Schools, at Koforidua and Kpando respectively.

He has attended a number of workshops which include Professional Management Skills for senior officers, Marketing Management at the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA), Crises management at the Ghana Armed Forces Command and Staff College, Project Planning, Monitoring and Evaluation at the Institute of Statistical, Social and Economic Research, University of Ghana.

DOP Adu Awuku has acquired a number of certificates whiles seconded to the UNMIL. Notably among them are; Basic Security in the Field (2009), Advanced Security in the Field (2009), Creativity and Problem Solving (2009), Conflict Management for Peacekeepers (2010) and International Computer Driving Licence (2010).

He enjoys listening to music, and is happily married with kids.
