Director of Prisons in Charge of Operations, Mr. Samuel Akampure Akolbire, was born on the 5th of October, 1966, at Zorbiisi within the Bolgatanga Municipality of the Upper East Region. He was enlisted into the senior corps of the Ghana Prisons Service on 1st December, 1995 as an officer cadet.
Until his current appointment, he was the General Staff Officer and the Commanding Officer of the Prisons Headquarters in Accra. By dint of hard work, selflessness, commitment, outright devotion to duty and perseverance, he rose through the ranks within the superior officer corps to become the Director of Prisons in Charge of Operations.
Mr. Akolbire has served in several capacities in the course of his career as a prison officer, both at national and international levels. He was the Welfare Officer/Security Coordinator at the Nsawam Medium Security Prison and thereafter the Officer in Charge of Winneba Local Prison. Again, he became the Second in Command of the Kpando Local Prison and subsequently the Substantive Officer In-Charge of the same prison.
DOP Akolbire holds a Master of Arts Degree in Human Resource Management from the University of Cape Coast; a Bachelor’s Degree in Social Work with Sociology from the University of Ghana; A Post Graduate Certificate and Post Graduate Diploma in Public Administration from the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA).
He is a proud product of the Zamse Secondary-Technical School in Bolgatanga.
He served as a Corrections Advisor and Mentor to the United Nations Mission in Liberia (UNMIL) from January, 2009 to July, 2010.
In August, 2018, he was appointed a member of the 7th Governing Council of the Service, representing the senior officer corps of the Ghana Prisons Service.
He is a great fan of football competitions involving all the national teams, as well as the World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE). He is married and blessed with five (5) children.
