INTERIOR MINISTER PAYS MAIDEN WORKNG VISIT TO THE NSAWAM MEDIUM SECURITY PRISON.
The Minister for the Interior, Hon. Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, on 17th November 2025, undertook his first official visit to the Nsawam Medium Security Prison. He was received with a Guard of Honour, after which the Regional Commander, Deputy Director of Prisons Patrick Thomas Seidu, delivered a brief historical overview of the facility and highlighted major achievements in education, agriculture, and health.
DDP Seidu noted that more than 50 inmates, across two cohorts, graduated from the University of Cape Coast earlier this year, with three obtaining First Class Honours, a remarkable and historic milestone for the Service. He also outlined the expansion of the agricultural programme from broiler production to layers and the establishment of a hospital annex now serving both officers’ dependents and the wider community. He further commended government for recent enhancements to the national feeding rate.
The Minister inspected ongoing strategic projects, including: the new Remand Prison Block, currently under construction, the Poultry Farm Project, featuring a modern 5,000-capacity battery cage system designed to boost agricultural productivity and provide hands-on training for inmates, along with an additional 1,000-bird broiler unit and the newly established Hospital Annex, intended to provide improved healthcare for officers’ dependents and the general public.
Delivering a message on behalf of His Excellency President John Dramani Mahama, Hon. Mohammed-Mubarak extended the President’s warm greetings and reaffirmed government’s steadfast commitment to strengthening the Ghana Prisons Service.
‘The Prison Service is often referred to as an orphan institution, but you can all attest that during my time with you, the level of support demonstrates our renewed commitment, inspired by the President,’ he stated.
Highlighting key interventions, the Minister cited the installation and management of security cameras across the entire facility, overseen by the National Security Bureau, and a renewed emphasis on modernizing and strengthening prison security.
Hon. Mohammed-Mubarak commended the Service’s expansion of industrial programmes, noting that furniture is now being produced entirely in-house, and reaffirmed that prison industrialization remains central to the government’s agenda.
The Minister also announced progress on the parole system, which is currently in its early implementation phase, and assured officers that government continues to engage key stakeholders to sustain improvements in the feeding rate.
Reiterating his dedication to the welfare of both officers and inmates, he pledged, “We will not take our eyes off your challenges. We will stay focused. I have your back; we are in this together, and you can count on me.”
The Minister also acknowledged the ongoing support of partners, notably Maripoma Enterprise, which has donated a four-wheel-drive vehicle to the Director-General of Prisons to enhance operational mobility.
