The Christ the King Cathedral Catholic Diocese of Sunyani has constructed a new kitchen facility for the Sunyani Central Prison as part of its commitment to promoting human dignity and improving the welfare of inmates.

The newly built kitchen is intended to enhance the preparation of meals under improved hygienic conditions, replacing the old facility, which had become too small for the growing prison population.. The project reflects the Catholic Church’s dedication to practical charity and social intervention, especially for marginalized members of society.

Speaking at the commissioning of the kitchen, The Very Rev. Father Joseph Domfeh who is the Cathedral administrator noted that the Church’s mission extends beyond spiritual care to include initiatives that improve living conditions and support rehabilitation. He emphasized that access to proper facilities such as a modern kitchen contributes significantly to the health and well-being of inmates. He urged prison authorities to properly maintain the facility to ensure its long-term use.

The Regional Commander and Officer-In-Charge of the facility, Deputy Director of Prisons (DDP.) Thompson Otsyokpo expressed gratitude to the Diocese for the construction of the new kitchen. He stated that the facility will improve efficiency, sanitation, and safety in food preparation, thereby benefiting inmates and prison staff alike. He mentioned that it would inure to the welfare of inmates, which features prominently in the Director-General of Prisons visionary initiative “Think Prisons 360 Degrees” agenda.

DDP. Thompson Otsyokpo gave assurance that the facility would be properly maintained to guarantee its long-term usability.The project forms part of the broader social development and charity programs, which focus on compassion, justice, and service to humanity.

The partnership between the Catholic Diocese of Sunyani and the Sunyani Central Prison serves as a strong example of how faith-based organizations can collaborate with state institutions to promote rehabilitation, social responsibility, and national development.
