SUNYANI CENTRAL PRISON SUPPLEMENTS INMATES RATION WITH FARM PRODUCE.

The Sunyani Central Prison under the leadership of the Regional Commander, Deputy Director of Prisons(DDP) Thompson Otsokpo has taken a significant step towards improving inmate welfare through the cultivation and use of vegetables such as cabbage and garden eggs to supplement daily meals of inmates.
The initiative also aligns with the DGs kitchen Support project, championed by the Director General of Prisons, Mrs. Patience Baffoe-Bonnie (Esq), which calls for every prison facility to be self-sufficient in feeding its inmates.

This initiative not only help address challenges with feeding but also promotes healthy eating among inmates. The farm produce at the facility provides an important supplement to the standard rations. Vegetables like cabbage and garden eggs also add variety and ensure inmates have access to balanced meals which are wholesome, attractive and nutritious.

Beyond feeding, some of the produce are also sold to the public, generating revenue that supports the day-to-day running of the prison farm. This approach ensures the initiative remains sustainable while strengthening ties between the facility and the surrounding communities.
The project also serves as a rehabilitation tool, equipping inmates with practical farming skills that can support their reintegration into society after serving their sentences. Inmates directly involved in the cultivation process gain hands-on experience in vegetable farming, boosting their sense of responsibility and productivity.

With the success of the harvest, the command is hopeful about expanding cultivation to include other crops, thereby deepening the impact of the program both on inmate welfare and on long-term rehabilitation efforts.
