DGP (RTD) ISAAC KOFI EGYIR PULLED – OUT

 The 25th   Director General of the Ghana Prisons Service, Mr Isaac Kofi Egyir was successfully fulled- out of active service after 29 years of service.

            The ceremony which was held on Monday, April 7, 2025 began with a church service at the Roman Ridge Pentecost Church followed by a ceremonial parade at the Prison Officers Training School (POTS). 

Delivering his farewell remarks, Mr. Isaac Kofi Egyir expressed deep gratitude to God, the state and all stakeholders for their support throughout his 29 years journey in the service, three and a half of which he served as Director General.

Quoting Ecclesiastes 3:1, Mr. Egyir said “Today marks the end of my journey in the Ghana Prison Service and the beginning of a new chapter in my life”. 

              Reflecting on his tenure, he highlighted several reforms and projects undertaken during his leadership, including restructuring the Prisons Directorate by separating the previously merged units of Finance and Administration, Services and Technical into four distinct departments: Finance, Administration, Services and Technical. 

             He mentioned that the creation of the Multilateral Relations Unit brought significant benefits to the service in areas such as rehabilitation, safe custody and inmates’ welfare through the efforts of the unit, the Ghana Education Trust Fund (GET Fund) provided support for the construction of a 5,000 capacity poultry project at the Nsawam Medium Security Prison to enhance food production and improve the nutritive value of inmate meals. 

            He added that, inmate education also saw significant improvements with many progressing from Junior High School through to Tertiary education, adding that in partnership with the University of Cape Coast, 63 inmates at the Nsawam Prison recently graduated with bachelor’s degrees. This is Mr. Egyir described as a milestone in inmate rehabilitation and reformation. DGP (Rtd) Kofi Egyir however acknowledged that the journey was not without setbacks, pointing out that, there were instances of misconduct and absenteeism which were met with firm disciplinary action to deter future occurrences. 

            Mr. Isaac Kofi Egyir was enlisted into the Ghana Prisons Service on December 5, 1995 as an officer cadet and member of the cadet course intake 13. 

He was a smart, intelligent and disciplined cadet officer and that earned him the position of the cadet sergeant. He commissioned as a Deputy Superintendent of Prisons (DSP) on July 5, 1996 as the Best All- Round Officer Cadet and won the Subject Prize for Corrections Management.  

            Mr. Egyir has over 29 years’ experience as a Prisons Officer has served in various capacities and held numerous command positions in the service prior to his appointment as the Director General.

After commissioning from the Prisons Officers Training School, he was the first ever officer to take up a Second in Command (2IC) position at the defunct Frafraha Camp Prison. He was the Deputy Director General of Prisons in Charge of Operations (January 2021 – October 2021). He had earlier held the position of Director of Prisons in Charge of Operations and Welfare (June 2020 – January 2021), Director of Prisons in Charge of Operation and Agriculture (January 2019 to June 2020). Eastern Reginal Commander and Officer in Charge of the Nsawam Medium Security Prison (January 2016 – December 2019). Commanding Officer of Prisons Headquarters (May 2015 – January 2016) and Chief Agric Officer from September, 2006 – October, 2007. 

            He was seconded to the United Nation Mission in Sudan as UN Corrections Advisor from October 2007 to April, 2009, Military Prisons Manager in United Nations Missions in South Sudan from April, 2012 to May, 2015.

He developed the first ever UN Missions Training Module on Military Prisons Management in South Sudan in 2013.

            He is married to Professor (Mrs.) Irene Egyir and they are blessed with three children. DGP (Rtd) Egyir enjoys reading, farming and football. He is an ardent support of Kumasi Asante Kotoko football club and Real Madrid football club.
