NORTHERN PRISONS INTER-STATION SPORTS FESTIVAL ENDS ON A HIGH NOTE
The Northern Prisons Inter-Station Sports Festival came to an exciting close on December 3, 2025, at the Aliu Mahama Sports Stadium. Teams from Tamale Central Prison, Tamale Female Prison, Yendi Local Prison, Gambaga Local Prison, and Salaga Local Prison competed fiercely in a variety of sporting disciplines.
In his opening remarks, the Northern Regional Commander of Prisons, DDP Obed Kofi Aquaye, welcomed all participating teams, emphasizing that the festival was designed to promote physical fitness, teamwork, and unity among officers. He commended the planning committee for their dedication and wished the competitors success, expressing hope that the event would inspire excellence across the Service.
DDP Aquaye later performed the ceremonial kick-off to officially begin the games. The festival featured competitions in football, volleyball, lime-on-spoon, sack race, Oware, draught, and playing cards.
These were the results at the end of the games.
Football: 1st – Yendi, 2nd – Gambaga, 3rd – Salaga, 4th – Tamale Central
Volleyball (Male): 1st – Gambaga, 2nd – Yendi, 3rd – Salaga, 4th – Tamale Central
Volleyball (Female): 1st – Yendi, 2nd – Tamale Central
The Chairman of the Northern Regional Football Association, Alhaji Abu Hassan Rhyzo, who served as Special Guest of Honour, praised the Regional Commander and the organizing team for a well-executed event. He commended the participants for their discipline, sportsmanship, and commitment throughout the competition. He further pledged the Association’s support for prison sports development whenever needed.
Alhaji Rhyzo presented the ultimate trophy to Yendi Local Prison, along with a cash prize of GH¢200.00.
In his closing remarks, DDP Aquaye congratulated all contingents for their impressive performances and announced plans to institutionalize the competition as a regular event either biannual or annual.
The festival was attended by several dignitaries, including ACFOI Joseph Koranteng, Regional Fire Service Commander; CSP Rose Awude, Acting OIC, Tamale Female Prison; CSP Emmanuel Adu Ghandi, OIC, Salaga Local Prison; Supt. Martin Mounah, OIC, Gambaga Local Prison; Mr. Emmanuel Dome, Deputy CEO, CSD Reforms; as well as senior and junior officers of the command.
