TAMALE CENTRAL AND FEMALE PRISONS HOST MENTAL HEALTH AWARENESS EDUCATION FOR OFFICERS
The Tamale Central and Female Prisons hosted a mental health awareness and education programme focused on stress management, stigma reduction, and substance abuse for officers at the prisons canteen on Friday, 22nd May, 2026.
The programme is aimed at promoting the mental well-being and emotional stability of officers in the discharge of their duties.

The session which was facilitated by Mr. Barnabas Atangongo, Community Mental Health Officer and Counseling Psychologist at Tamale West Hospital, educated officers on the causes, effects, and management of stress, the importance of avoiding stigmatization of persons facing mental health challenges, and the dangers of substance abuse.

Officers actively participated, asking relevant questions for further clarification and education. The discussions helped them better understand how to manage personal and work-related situations concerning mental health and emotional well-being.

Acting Second-In-Command, Chief Supt. Benedict Sanziri, on behalf of the Regional Commander, DDP Obed K. Acquaye, and all officers, thanking the mental health professional for the impact, clarity, and education shared.
The programme was insightful and impactful. Officers expressed appreciation to the Northern Command of the Ghana Prisons Service and Prisons Headquarters for initiating the intervention to improve personnel welfare and mental health.
