GHANA PRISONS SERVICE ENGAGES OSU PREBYTERIAN SHS ON YOUTH AND CRIME

The Ghana Prisons Service has engaged students of Osu Presbyterian Senior High School in an educational programme aimed at sensitising the youth on crime prevention and responsible living.

The outreach was led by Chief Superintendent of Prisons Abdul Latif Adamu and Superintendent of Prisons Irene Pieteson Arthur, who took the students through discussions on youth involvement in crime and its consequences.

In his presentation, Chief Superintendent Abdul Latif Adamu (Chief Public Relations Officer) highlighted the major causes of crime in society and outlined practical ways students can protect themselves from becoming both perpetrators and victims of criminal activities. He urged the students to be content with what their parents and guardians provide and to resist negative peer pressure.

He further cautioned the students on the realities of prison life, stressing that prison custody is not a comfortable place and comes with serious consequences that could affect their future.

Supt. Irene Arthur also addressed the students on issues of drug abuse and sexual abuse. She encouraged young girls to promptly report cases of sexual harassment or assault to their parents, guardians, or trusted authorities.

She advised students who find themselves in negative peer groups to disengage, noting that such associations often lead to criminal behaviours such as stealing, drug use, bullying, and violence, which could ultimately result in imprisonment.

She concluded by reminding the students that teenagers are not exempt from the law, and that engaging in criminal activities can lead to prison custody regardless of age.
