FROM CELLS TO SCREENS: GHANA PRISONS SERVICE LAUNCHES GHANA PRISONS TV

The Ghana Prisons Service has officially launched Ghana Prisons TV, a new television platform dedicated to telling the story of the Service, showcasing its rehabilitation programmes and highlighting the transformation, talents and achievements of inmates and officers.The launch was held under the theme: “Changing the Narrative, Rehabilitating and Inspiring Through Ghana Prisons TV.”

The historic launch, held on Friday, 18th September 2026, at the Prisons Headquarters in Accra, brought together distinguished guests, including government officials, service commanders, former Directors, corporate organisations, representatives of religious bodies, media practitioners, officers and other stakeholders.

In her welcome address, the Director-General of Ghana Prisons Service, Mrs. Patience Baffoe-Bonnie (Esq.), described the launch as a significant milestone in the Service’s communication and transformation agenda. She explained that Ghana Prisons TV would serve not only as a media platform but also as a practical training environment where inmates could acquire valuable skills in television and media production.

According to the Director-General, the station would provide an avenue to tell authentic stories of rehabilitation, transformation, and hope while helping to address misconceptions about the Prisons Service. She emphasised the importance of the service telling its own story and giving visibility to the dedication, innovation, and positive work taking place within Ghana’s correctional facilities.

In a remarks, the Special Guest of Honour, the Minister for Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts, and also the Member of Parliament for Ketu South Constituency, Hon. Abla Dzifa Gomashie commended the Ghana Prisons Service for embracing television as a platform to reshape public understanding of the correctional system. She noted that creative arts and storytelling are powerful tools for rehabilitation, as they can build confidence, restore dignity, and create opportunities for personal development and reintegration.

The Minister further called on stakeholders to support Ghana Prisons TV through technical expertise, training, equipment, and strategic partnerships. She also encouraged the promotion and patronage of Made-in-Ghana products as a means of supporting local economic development.

The Ghana Prisons TV as part of the Think Prisons 360 Degrees initiative is expected to feature content on rehabilitation, skills development, creative arts, education, agriculture, health, reintegration, institutional activities and human-interest stories. The platform will also provide public education on the mandate and operations of the Ghana Prisons Service.

The launch was attended by the Deputy Minister for the Interior, Hon. Ebenezer Okletey Terlabi, Mayor of Tema, Hon. Ebi Bright, Comptroller-General of Immigration, Mr. Samuel Amadu Basintale, Managing Director of SIC Life Insurance, Ing. Solomon Twum Barima (Esq.), former Directors of Ghana Prisons Service, Service Commanders, representatives of corporate organisations and religious bodies, traditional leaders, media practitioners, officers, and other stakeholders.
