PRISONS SERVICE WINS BEST PRACTICAL AGRIC AGENCY AT FARMERS’ DAY CELEBRATION

The Ghana Prisons Service was yesterday, Friday, December 5, 2025 awarded the National Best Security Agency in Practical Agriculture at the 41st National Farmers’ Day Celebration in Ho.

The colourful ceremony held under the theme ” Feed Ghana, Eat Ghana and Secure the Future” brought together dignitaries including government officials, heads of security institutions, diplomats, donors, traditional rulers and students from second cycle institutions.

The chairman for this year’s celebration was the overload and President of the Asogli traditional area, His Royal Majesty Togbe Afede XIV and the special guest was His Excellency the President of the Republic, John Dramani Mahama.

Driven by the passion and relentless efforts of the Director General of Prisons, Mrs. Patience Baffoe-Bonnie(ESQ) the Nsawam Medium Security Prison farms emerged as ultimate winner for the National Security Agencies Practical Agriculture category with the cultivation of large acrage of cassava, maize, palm plantation and an ultra modern poultry farm.

In an address by the President, H.E. John Dramani Mahama, he encouraged farmers to take irrigation very seriously to ensure continuous food security.

He noted that, government would continue to support farmers with credit facilities and logistics. President Mahama stressed that, the Ministry for Food and Agriculture will soon distribute solar water pumps to farmers to ensure all year-round farming.

President John Mahama hinted on the introduction of the School Agric Programme that would ensure that all Senior High and Tertiary Institutions produce their own vegetables and livestock. ” I have directed that all those involved in the school feeding programme, security and government institutions patronize from our local farmers, especially rice, maize and poultry,” he added.

The Ghana Prisons Service was presented with a brand new Lovol tractor, 5 jet motorized spraying machines, cutlasses and wellington boots as prize package.

With the transformational agenda in mechanizing agriculture in the service, this huge recognition has come as a morale booster to motivate other prison farms to increase their yield and expand their agricultural activities.

The 41st National Farmers Day Celebration held at the Ho Sports Stadium was graced by the Director General of Prisons, Mrs. Patience Baffoe-Bonnie(ESQ), the Director of Prisons in charge of Agriculture, Mr. Ali Kwaku Ababio, the Volta regional commander, DDP. Wilson Sallah, officer in charge of the Ho female prison, CSP. Milicent Okity and other senior officers from the Prisons headquarters and the volta regional command.
