NSAWAM PRISON COMPLEX RECEIVES LIFE-SAVING BLS TRAINING

The Nsawam Prison Complex comprising the Nsawam Medium Security Prison, Nsawam Camp Prison, and Nsawam Female Prison have benefited from a timely and impactful Basic Life Support (BLS) training programme organized by African Partners Medical Group (APMG) in collaboration with the Nsawam Prisons Hospital.

The initiative, which targeted both officers and inmates, underscored the importance of preparedness in managing medical emergencies within custodial settings. Recognising that prompt and informed response can mean the difference between life and death, the training equipped participants with essential lifesaving skills.

The comprehensive workshop covered the recognition of life-threatening emergencies, activation of emergency response systems, high-quality cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), use of automated external defibrillators (AEDs), management of airway obstruction, and the provision of immediate care before advanced medical intervention.

Speaking at the closing session, the Eastern Regional Commander highlighted the critical role of BLS training in strengthening institutional safety, enhancing duty of care, and promoting respect for human rights within correctional facilities. He noted that such capacity-building initiatives foster effective collaboration between health and security personnel and significantly reduce preventable deaths during medical emergencies involving inmates, staff, and visitors.

The Chief Superintendent of Prisons and Medical Officer in Charge, Dr. Lawrence K. Acheampong, who led the Nsawam Prisons Hospital team, urged both officers and inmates to take the training seriously. He advocated for the continuous allocation of personnel for BLS training and emphasized the importance of sustained partnership with African Partners Medical Group to institutionalize life-saving skills across the prison system.
