VICE PREZ PROF. JANE NAANA OPOKU-AGYEMANG, CELEBRATES HER BIRTHDAY WITH PRISONERS

On 22nd November, the Vice President of the Republic of Ghana, Prof. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, marked her birthday by celebrating with inmates at the Nsawam Prisons Complex. She was represented by the Chief of Staff to the Vice President, Mr. Alex Segbefia, who conveyed her warm greetings and best wishes.

Mr. Segbefia noted that the Vice President’s birthday this year holds special significance as the nation approaches the festive Christmas season. On her behalf, he donated various essential items to the Medium Security Prison, including:

200 bags of rice

10 cartons of tin tomatoes

10 cartons of sardine

10 bags of sugar

100 cartons of sanitary pads

10 gallons of cooking oil

The items were received on behalf of the Director-General of Prisons by the Eastern Regional Commander and Officer in Charge of the Nsawam Medium Security Prison, Deputy Director of Prisons Patrick Thomas Seidu. He described the donation as a timely intervention that will greatly support the inmates during the Christmas festivities.

DDP Seidu further noted that the Vice President is indeed fulfilling her assurances to the Ghana Prisons Service. He recalled that earlier in August this year, the Vice President met with the top hierarchy of the Service, led by Mrs. Patience Baffoe-Bonnie (ESQ), and pledged her support for their operations.

He expressed optimism that following recent support from the Hon. Sam George Foundation, from the Interior Minister’s recent visit, and now from the Vice President “there is no doubt that the President HE John Dramani Mahama himself will soon visit the facility.”

The Eastern Regional Commander also expressed gratitude for the recent upward adjustment of the inmate feeding rate from GHC 1.80 to GHC 5.00, noting that it has brought significant relief and hope. However, he highlighted continuing challenges, especially the lack of an ambulance, which makes it extremely difficult to transfer inmates to larger hospitals during emergencies particularly when oxygen support is required.

After the brief ceremony, the Regional Commander led the Chief of Staff to meet inmate leaders, where the items were formally handed over on behalf of the Vice President.
